I've been involved in the world of gadgets for many years now. And in the last ones, ever since the first Asus EEE PC 4G entered the market and started the trend named "netbook", many people around me are confused on what is a netbook and what is a regular laptop. That's why I've decided to put on paper this article to help you better understand the differences and similarities between them.
First, i could characterize a netbook as a small-form-factor laptop, with a more compact body and reduced weight. And this is exactly what they are. However, the size of the netbook is given by the diagonal of the screen, and there are such mini computers with displays ranging from 7 to 12 inch, thus weighing from 2 to 3.5 pounds. Regular laptops on the other hand have screen diagonals of at least 13.3 inches, although the most popular are bigger, with screens at least 15.4 inch big. That ads to their size and weight by quite a lot.
So, netbooks are smaller and lighter than a regular laptop. Thus, are better when it comes to carrying them around.
Inside, there's similar hardware on a netbook and on a standard laptop. They all come with processor, hard-drives, USB ports, graphics, etc. However, since netbooks are more compact, there's less room for components inside, thus the hardware they pack is slower in terms of performances than the one on a laptop. So, netbooks are fast enough to run daily applications like a chat messenger, a browser, a movie, an email client, etc. But hey can't face games or heavy applications, which bigger laptops usually do.
Having the lower power hardware on the other hand helps a lot in terms of autonomy, thus most netbooks can offer battery life of 5 to 8 hours from a 6 Cell battery. And there are some capable of 12-14 hours on a single charge. Sounds good, ay? Last but not least, there's a price difference. A mainstream netbook goes for around $330 these days, while a laptop goes for at least 500 bucks.
All in all, laptops and netbooks are similar and different. Laptops are good for everyday performances and according to the model you pick, can fulfill all your requirements, no matter how demanding they are. Netbooks on the other hand are smaller, lighter and cheaper. They will do great with most standard applications, but they lack certain features, like an internal optical unit for instance.
I for one see netbooks as secondary computers for life on the go. For light browsing, chatting, watching a movie while on the plane, they are the best. However, in case you're not a poweruser or a kid, a netbook would do great as your primary computer too.
