Since the dawn of the netbook revolution a couple of years ago, Asus has been in the forefront of the industry and has remained a forerunner till this day. Its sleek Asus Eee PC series has dominated the entry-level and mid-range netbook market and it looks set to take on the premium netbook market with the new Asus Eee 1005PR netbook model.
While the new Asus Eee 1005PR remains pretty much the same with the 1005PE model in terms of design and specs, it features one major upgrade. Its 10.1-inch display is a HD screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution. This new model also comes with a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator that enables the netbook to play HD videos and movies. We tested a variety of HD videos on this new model and it generally did a great job, especially at playing HD movies that are stored in the hard drive. While playing streaming HD videos from websites, the images can be choppy at times (especially in full screen mode) but overall, the image quality was generally very good.
Other than the new HD features, the new Asus Eee 1005PR has almost identical specs to the 1005PE. It has an Intel Atom N450 processor, a 250GB hard drive and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. For graphics, it has an Intel GMA 3150 graphics card. This model has a good selection of connectivity that includes 3 USB ports, a memory card reader, Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi. In runs on the Windows 7 Starter OS. Design wise, the Asus Eee 1005PR sports the company's signature seashell design that looks very sleek and slim. It measures at around 10.31 x 7.01 x 1.2 inches in dimensions and weighs 2.81 pounds.
The 6-cell battery that comes with this model can last up to 11 hours on one charge, bringing the term 'portable' to a whole new level. All, in all, the Asus Eee 1005PR proves to be an excellent upgrade for those who are looking for a netbook that can play HD movies and videos. It has a great design, excellent feature set and good performance for a netbook of its class. This premium netbook model is currently selling at just around $399 per unit.
